{"id":2366,"date":"2016-04-29T16:29:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T16:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=2366"},"modified":"2016-05-02T14:26:54","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T14:26:54","slug":"know-when-not-to-go-flying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=2366","title":{"rendered":"Know when NOT to go flying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d been planned up and had Prior Permission to fly into Marshland, a grass strip 6ft below sea level.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>EGSC 291250Z 25022G32KT 220V280 9999 VCSH FEW020 SCT049CB 11\/M02 Q1007=<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That should be all you need to see to make you stop in your tracks and say <em>&#8220;Hmm, no, perhaps not today.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t read <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/METAR\" target=\"_blank\">METAR&#8217;s<\/a> yet, it basically says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;At Cambridge Airport (EGSC) the surface wind is <strong>22 Knots<\/strong>, from 250 degrees, Gusting to <strong>32 Knots<\/strong> &#8211; varying anything from straight down the runway to completely cross-wind.\u00a0\u00a0 The cloud base is pretty good except for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumulonimbus_cloud\" target=\"_blank\">Cumulonimbus<\/a> clouds (i.e. You might get Thunderstorms) and even if you don&#8217;t, the turbulence in the area is likely to be interesting.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Cessna 172 Pilot Operating Handbook says the demonstrated crosswind performance is 15 knots <em>(it also says this is not strictly a limitation of the aircraft, simply what a test pilot has actually shown possible).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some days especially if you&#8217;ve been looking forward to going flying for a while it can be so tempting to try and push your luck.\u00a0 Maybe it won&#8217;t be so bad when you&#8217;re up there.<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm&#8230;..\u00a0 as the saying goes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">Better to be down here, wishing you were up there.\u00a0 Then up there, wishing you were down here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d been planned up and had Prior Permission to fly into Marshland, a grass strip 6ft below sea level.
