{"id":346,"date":"2011-12-27T19:54:03","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T18:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=346"},"modified":"2012-01-25T18:36:23","modified_gmt":"2012-01-25T17:36:23","slug":"lesson-13-circuit-flying-at-christmas-cancelled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=346","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 13: Circuit Flying at Christmas (Cancelled)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unexpected day off in the run-up to Christmas presented an opportunity to begin circuit flying and generally just go flying at Christmas, which seemed like a good idea \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;..unfortunately high cross winds were to scupper any such ideas, as on arrival to the aero club, yet another instructor (in all seriousness, this is starting to get silly!) met me and said we&#8217;d have to cancel <em>(13 unlucky for some)<\/em> &#8211; but we could do the briefing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Briefing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For non-flying readers, circuit flying is essentially flying &#8220;laps&#8221; of the airport, it&#8217;s the pattern planes will enter so they aren&#8217;t coming at the runway(s) every which way they feel like.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So an airport might operate a &#8216;left hand circuit&#8217;, this simply means that the circuit is made up of left hand turns.\u00a0\u00a0 Height (QFE) of the circuit varies, but is typically 1000ft.<\/p>\n<p>It might be easier with a picture, so here&#8217;s the white board from the briefing&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_349\" style=\"width: 832px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/circuit_flying_brief_wb.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-349\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-349 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 5px;\" title=\"circuit_flying_brief_wb\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/circuit_flying_brief_wb.png\" alt=\"Circuit Flying Briefing White Board\" width=\"822\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/circuit_flying_brief_wb.png 822w, http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/circuit_flying_brief_wb-300x175.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 822px) 100vw, 822px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Circuit Flying Briefing White Board<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is a left hand circuit, so the diagram above can be roughly read as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Vr = Rotate speed, 55 Knots (Cessna 172SP)<em> &#8211; bit on that later. <\/em>The Co of 80knots is Climb Out speed of 80 Knots, this is the speed the club likes to use, 74 would actually be optimum in this plane<em> (according to the aircraft&#8217;s book of words).<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Climb (Upwind), after 200ft perform after take-off checks<\/li>\n<li>500ft, using 20 degrees Angle of Bank (AOB) begin a turning left climb onto the Crosswind Leg.<\/li>\n<li>Crosswind Leg :\u00a0 Level the aircraft off at 1000ft (circuit height), tracking a landmark<em> (red circles with dots in in the diagram above)<\/em>.\u00a0 APT = Attitude, Power, Trim.\u00a0\u00a0 The sequence for leveling off for straight and level flight.<\/li>\n<li>Using 30 degrees angle of bank, turn on to the downwind leg.\u00a0\u00a0 Note: We can use 30 degrees because at this point the plane will be flying straight and level <em>&#8211; use less in the climb because the risk of stalling are increased.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>During the Downwind leg, the radio call is made <em>(see the scribbles below the diagram)<\/em>, T+G =\u00a0 &#8220;Touch and Go&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Also during the Downwind leg the pre-landing checks need to be run through:\u00a0 At my aero club these are:\n<ol>\n<li><strong>B<\/strong>rakes\u00a0 : Do we have pressure?<\/li>\n<li><strong>M<\/strong>ixture :\u00a0 Rich<\/li>\n<li><strong>F<\/strong>uel : Do we still have plenty, enough to go around etc.?<\/li>\n<li><strong>H<\/strong>arnesses : Everyone strapped in properly?<\/li>\n<li><strong>H<\/strong>atchess:\u00a0 Everything locked and secure?<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>utopilot:\u00a0 Off&#8230;&#8230;<em>we&#8217;ll do the landing thanks.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Keeping a good lookout and flying against the landmarks to avoid drifting with the wind, turn on to the Base Leg.<\/li>\n<li>Base Leg:\u00a0 Start the descent for final &#8211; PAT (Power, Attitude, Trim), bring the power back into the white arc, lower the initial flaps, turn on to Final.<\/li>\n<li>Final :\u00a0 Remember that radio call ATC asked for? \u00a0 Time to declare ourselves on final and get clearance to land (Scribble on the lower right), lower the last stage of flaps (30 degrees) and trim for 65 knots.<\/li>\n<li>And with all that done, all that&#8217;s left to do is land the thing&#8230;..<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Simple&#8230;&#8230;..Now I just need the weather to play nice in the next week and maybe we&#8217;ll be able to go and put the theory into practice!<\/p>\n<p><strong>One last note:<\/strong> Remember that rotate speed (55 knots),\u00a0 well if you&#8217;ve read my last few posts, I&#8217;ve done take offs in various ways dependant on the instructors preferred style and this is why I&#8217;m not a massive fan of flying with different people all the time, but it&#8217;s all good.\u00a0\u00a0 The constant in my world has been rotating at 65 knots, so me and newest instructor had a bit of a back and forth on what speed I&#8217;d rotate at &#8220;65&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;you mean 55&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;No, I mean 65&#8230;.&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite an interesting exercise actually to look online for what others think on this, because it&#8217;s far from absolute.<\/p>\n<p>The answer I like the most and I find quite fitting for VFR flight, is <em> <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;You have no right looking at the airspeed indicator&#8230;&#8230;once you know it&#8217;s alive.\u00a0 Keep your eyes outside, the plane will take off when its good and ready, the speed is irrelevant.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure many an instructor would disagree with that, but it made me laugh and given I&#8217;ve been told off many times for &#8220;flying on instruments&#8221;, it almost has some sanity behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s something I&#8217;ll get a second opinion on in a week or two, I don&#8217;t really care who&#8217;s right and who&#8217;s wrong &#8211; I&#8217;ll use any number that keeps the examiner happy \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An unexpected day off in the run-up to Christmas presented an opportunity to begin circuit flying and generally just go flying at Christmas, which seemed like a good idea \ud83d\ude42 &#8230;..unfortunately high cross winds were to scupper any such ideas, as on arrival to the aero club, yet another instructor (in all seriousness, this is [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[13,4],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=346"}],"version-history":[{"count":14,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":361,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346\/revisions\/361"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=346"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=346"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=346"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
