The number of checks, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before<\/span> the plane is started.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>39<\/strong> &#8211; The number of checks, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">after<\/span> the plane has been started, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before<\/span> you can take-off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was a ground only lesson, going through the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where the club keeps the books<\/li>\n<li>Aircraft keys and documents<\/li>\n<li>External check list for the aeroplane<\/li>\n<li>Internal (Pre-start, Pre-Taxi and Pre-Take-Off) checklists<\/li>\n<li>Taxing<\/li>\n<li>Turns &amp; Tight Turns<\/li>\n<li>Shutting down the aeroplane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s Exercise 5 of the PPL Course book.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the shear numbers, there&#8217;s a lot to check.<\/p>\n<p>G-UFCB as we found during the checks, was in a bit of a beaten up way.\u00a0\u00a0 Good news from my perspective:\u00a0\u00a0 Instead of talking about <em>&#8220;if it has a bald patch on the tyre&#8230;&#8221;<\/em>, this plane actually had one. \u00a0 Instead of trying to imagine what a plane looks like when you can&#8217;t see any of its front gear <a title=\"Oleo Gear Design\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CCQQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FOleo_strut&amp;rct=j&amp;q=orlio%20strut&amp;ei=E6RHTor5N86DhQfukpCNBg&amp;usg=AFQjCNEV3LOjVFicdPrbF3Xjr-NPVjq32g&amp;cad=rja\" target=\"_blank\">Oleo <\/a>this plane had no metal visible <em>(even when the instructor pushed on the stabliser at the back to try and lift the nose).<\/em> So from a lesson perspective, a good plane &#8211; at the end of the day the plane was already scheduled in for maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>My first ever taxi was never going to fantastic, but for whatever reason no matter how hard I pushed on the left rudder pedal, the plane wanted to keep going right (I guess it knew its way to the runway!) &#8211; the instructor had a go and commented on it.\u00a0\u00a0 However, you can turn a plane like you can turn a tank &#8211; break one side and the difference in power will cause it to turn.<\/p>\n<p>We did some turns, some tight turns (using the brakes), probably got in the way of a couple of people wondering <em>&#8220;why are they spinning a Cessna round and around&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> Then taxied back to the parking area, the taxi back was a bit better.<\/p>\n<p>After Landing &amp; Shutdown procedures (Just<strong> 17<\/strong> checks), the lesson was done.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting this course I&#8217;d done a lot of simulator stuff, read a lot etc.\u00a0 What I realised today is that what you just can&#8217;t learn without doing it, short of having a like-for-like hardware simulator, is how it all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feels<\/span>: \u00a0 How much friction is there on the throttle, what it <em>actually<\/em> feels like to set the heading indicator etc.\u00a0\u00a0 What does it <em>feel like<\/em> when the rev&#8217;s drop 100RPM.<\/p>\n<p><em>Finally, the Cessna photo is not mine, so credit to <a title=\"Cessna G-UFCB Photo Author\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/oldbuckshots\/4806926926\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Allan<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lesson 2: Pre-flight aircraft checks, aircraft start-up checklists, taxing turns and shutdown. 85 &#8211;
