{"id":86,"date":"2011-08-17T09:18:40","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T08:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=86"},"modified":"2011-08-17T09:25:05","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T08:25:05","slug":"the-headset-dilemma-sennheiser-vs-david-clark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fortyfivehours.co.uk\/?p=86","title":{"rendered":"Headset Dilemma (Sennheiser Vs David Clark)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Normally if you asked me about headsets, I&#8217;d tell you go directly to Sennheiser, when it comes to closed monitoring of sound, they&#8217;re the best. \u00a0 Use a pair of <a title=\"HD-25's\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sennheiser.co.uk\/uk\/home_en.nsf\/root\/professional_headphones-headsets_headphones_502188\" target=\"_blank\">HD-25&#8217;s<\/a> and any definition you had of a good set of headphones for monitoring sound <em>(particularly with VERY HIGH background noise) <\/em>will be shattered.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at commercial aviation (airliners), you can see much of the HD-25 in Sennheisers&#8217; range of commercial aviation headsets (e.g. <a title=\"HMEC 26 Airline headset\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sennheiser.co.uk\/uk\/home_en.nsf\/root\/professional_aviation_active-noise_502397\">HMEC 26<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to General Aviation, I&#8217;ll admit to being a bit shocked.\u00a0\u00a0 At the General Aviation level, David Clark is pretty much the standard.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve worn them, I&#8217;ve looked at their technical details\u00a0 and generally done what I guess a lot of first time aviation headset buying people will go through:\u00a0<em> Spending a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lot<\/span> of time trying to work out which way to go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you&#8217;d expect online lots of people have very polar views on who is best and why&#8230;.but it&#8217;s vaguely fair to say the H10-13.4 or H10-60 are the Passive favourites of the David Clark camp.\u00a0\u00a0 For Sennheiser it&#8217;s the HME 110.<\/p>\n<p><em>The HME 110 is the same as the 100, the difference is simply:\u00a0 Black caps, softer pads and the head cushion has been made softer &#8211; so technically the same thing, but for the black caps alone I&#8217;m ignoring the HME 100&#8217;s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>David Clark:\u00a0 The Pro&#8217;s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Largely the Industry Standard<\/li>\n<li>More compact design relative to the HME 110, with emphasis on the radius of the microphone arm is on &amp; the size of the mic. wind screen<\/li>\n<li>A military product look of robustness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8230;and to be honest, then I start to struggle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sennheiser: The Pro&#8217;s<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Arguably slightly better Noise Reduction Rating 24dB <em>[David Clarks: 22-23<\/em>dB<em>]<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Much better headphone frequency response range (45 &#8211; 15,000Hz) <em>[David Clarks typical response range of 200-5,500Hz]<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Better Microphone response range (200-5,500Hz) <em>[David Clarks (H10-13.4) is 300Hz&#8211;3.5KHz]<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Lower Weight (350g)<em>,<\/em> roughly 25% less than the David Clark models<em> [DC&#8217;s 10-60: 623 grams \/ H10-13.4: 467 grams]<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Warranty&#8230;&#8230;.I&#8217;ve heard a lot of people talk about spare parts for David Clarks, true.\u00a0\u00a0 Sennheiser&#8217;s response would appear to be:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;Spare parts?\u00a0 You won&#8217;t be needing those, have a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">10 year<\/span> warranty on us&#8221;).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Human speech is <a title=\"Human Speach Frequency Range\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_voice\">60-7,000Hz<\/a> range, as such for best reproduction you want something that has a frequency response at least twice this range<em> (Can you see where Sennheiser is going with it&#8217;s frequency responses yet)<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Anything that can&#8217;t respond to this range will be dependant on picking up the harmonics of the original frequency&#8230;&#8230;.so<em> in theory<\/em> if you put out a sound around 60Hz, the DC&#8217;s will only pickup the 4th harmonic of that sound.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the theory anyway, I have v.good hearing &#8211; how good it is at top and low end frequencies while a Cessna&#8217;s engine is roaring in the background is another question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sennheiser size<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think the best video of the HME 110 in use I&#8217;ve seen is <a title=\"VFR over the hudson (with HME 110)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X1A2WXl74Ig\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a>, you can see what I mean about the radius of the mic boom arm, relative to other headsets.<\/p>\n<p>The last bit is my only concern, but having watched a few other videos (and also the fact it&#8217;s not stopping the above video user operate\u00a0 a massive camera), I&#8217;m starting to be less worried.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other videos of Sennheiser &amp;
